Lord Crathorne is Mayor of the Staple for the year 2017 – 2018. He was Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire for fifteen and a half years retiring in 2014. He has sat in the House of Lords since the death of his father in 1977. He is Co-Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Arts and Heritage Group. He was one of the first Trustees of the Heritage Lottery Fund. He was Chairman and then President of The Georgian Group for 25 years. He is a Knight of St John (K St J) and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (FSA). In 2012 The Queen appointed him a Knight Commander of The Royal Victorian Order (KCVO).
He has honorary doctorates from Teesside University and York University. He has been given the Freedom of the City of York and of the town of Richmond, North Yorkshire. He is also a Freeman of the City of London.For many years, he has been actively involved in The Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond, North Yorkshire. He has been President of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society. His other great interests are photography and writing. He has had three books published which are partly illustrated with his own photographs.
He and his late wife Sylvia have a son and two daughters and he now has seven grandchildren.
